Activities
TC32-TG17 was formed in mid 1999 to develop standards and technical reports for IP-based multimedia communications in a business environment.
TG17's work is concerned with Corporate Telecommunication Networks (CN) that support multi-media real-time communications based on the Internet Protocol (IP).
Now that SIP has become the dominant signalling protocol for IP-based CNs, current work focuses on SIP-based CNs, and in particular on CNs that are able to interoperate using IP and SIP with carrier networks, in particular Next Generation Networks (NGN), and with other enterprise networks. The term "Next Generation Corporate Networks (NGCN) is used for such CNs.
Current work includes:
• Interconnection of Next Generation Corporate Networks (NGCN) with Next Generation carrier Networks (NGN) using SIP-based signalling;
• Mobile business communication, including mobility aspects of intra- and inter-NGCN as well as NGCN – NGN communication;
• Inter-NGCN communication by peering arrangements / federations.
The TC32-TG17 White Paper on NGCN is available here.
For work relating to NGN, TG17 works in close cooperation with ETSI TISPAN.
Completed work of TG17 includes interoperation with Private Integrated Services Networks (PISN), including:
• Interworking of PISNs and IP-based CNs via a gateway, i.e., interworking between QSIG and H.323 and interworking between QSIG and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP);
• Connection of PISN components via IP network infrastructure, i.e., tunnelling of QSIG over H.323 and tunnelling of QSIG over SIP.
Ecma has published the following Standards and Technical Reports prepared by TG17.
Work in progress
Ecma Technical Reports
TG17 plans to finalise a second edition of Technical Report TR/92 "Mobility for Enterprise Communications” by the end of 2008. This TR is considered as an umbrella document to a series of more specific TRs covering Mobility management, Identity management and Device management.
TG17 is also developing a new series of TRs on "NGCN (Next Generation Corporate Networks)".
The series’ ”General” TR surveys IP-based enterprise communication within Corporate telecommunication Networks (CNs) and in particular NGCNs. It investigates key technical issues and identifies current standardisation work.
The entire series, which builds upon TR/91 and TR/92, focuses on inter-zone and inter-domain communication, including communication between parts of the same enterprise, between enterprises and between enterprises and carriers.
TG17 approved initial deliverables in April 2008:
- TR/NGCN - General and
-
TR/NGCN - Identification and Routing.
Other planned deliverables of the series include NGN interworking, Security, Applications, Location-based services, NAT/firewall traversal, Regulatory considerations (Lawful interception, Emergency calls, Prioritised communications for disaster relief), Quality issues.
Next Generation Networks
TG17 observes and contributes to activities in the area of NGN (Next Generation Network), in particular the work of ETSI TISPAN. A close co-operation between TG17 and TISPAN Working Groups with frequent joint meetings has been established.
TG17 continues to co-operate with ITU-T SG13 Q2/13 on "Use cases and requirements for enterprise communication in an NGN environment".
Contributing to the work of the IETF
As part of its work on the new TR "NGCN (Next Generation Corporate Networks)", TG17 has investigated peering between enterprise networks. TG17 members have submitted an Internet Draft on enterprise peering to the IETF.
Based on the work on the various Ecma Standards concerning the interworking between QSIG and SIP, members of TG17 have submitted various Internet Drafts on the following subjects to the IETF:
- Signalling interworking between QSIG Basic Call and SIP,
- Tunnelling of QSIG over SIP,
- Signalling interworking between QSIG and SIP - Call Transfer,
- Signalling interworking between QSIG and SIP - Call Diversion.
One of them, the "Signalling interworking between QSIG Basic Call and SIP" became RFC 4497 in May 2006.
ECMA-355 Tunnelling of QSIG over SIP, 3rd Edition
Standard ECMA-355 (corresponding to ISO/IEC 22535, and ETSI TS 102 345) deals with the tunnelling of QSIG messages through SIP networks. Since the publication of the second edition of this Standard, the IETF has specified several enhancements in the field of negotiating media characteristics for the underlying SIP call. Ecma TG32-TG17 has approved this new edition coping with these enhancements and adding more flexibility for architectures beyond the original scope of Standard ECMA-355.
Associated activities
TG17 works in close cooperation with ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 06 by giving early exposure of and seeking feedback on TG17's work, to facilitate the eventual adoption of the work as International Standards.
