The workshop will provide members the information to help make the decisions and start preparatory work. Your participation is requested with the objective to:

  • Discuss how the areas may fit into Ecma as a standardization activity.
  • Take advantage of early involvement.
  • Identify which areas fit into members interests.
  • Understand the opinions of all members.
  • Build consensus on a potential new work item.
  • Outline the standardization requirements.

The European Union (EU) is in the process of finalizing the REGULATION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on harmonised rules on fair access to and use of data (Data Act). The EU Data Act inter alia aims at regulating cloud services, including market access requirements for Cloud interoperability, Cloud switching and Cloud portability. The draft regulation foresees that compliance with the essential requirements may be demonstrated with harmonised European standards, i.e. following the traditional way of technical regulation in the EU, but also with open interoperability specifications identified by the European Commission.

This workshop will provide an introductory overview on the intended requirements for Cloud service providers for operating on the EU single market. The workshop will also kick-off a discussion whether Ecma may be a place for the members to develop some of the standards required. They could then be fast-tracked into formal European standards or promoted for acceptance as open interoperability specifications.

Ecma has long standing experience in collaborating with formally recognised standards bodies on standards relevant for regulatory and policy contexts. Ecma’s processes have proven to be agile and efficient. Ecma is able to move quickly and adapt to changing needs due to our lean and flexible approach. Moreover, Ecma brings significant value in bringing standardization and open source together, including Ecma’s IPR policy allowing for the respective options.
